Background

The Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace (CICP), established in 1993 by H.R.H Samdech Norodom Sirivudh, is Cambodia’s oldest foreign policy think tank and leading platform for Track 2 foreign affairs dialogue. CICP strives to stimulate viable, policy-based research to address a range of challenges and promote balanced debate on the critical issues affecting Cambodia and the region. Over the course of nearly 30 years, CICP has engaged with analysts, scholars, and diplomats from across the globe to examine the geopolitical, security, social, and economic questions that impact both Cambodia as well as Southeast Asia as a whole.  

CICP is ranked 32nd out of 100 think tanks in Southeast Asia by the Lauder Index at the University of Pennsylvania. As an institution, CICP is grounded in three simple terms: objective, neutral, and independent. It engages without bias and seeks to motivate stronger policy-oriented academic research in the Kingdom and actively partners with a diverse set of actors in order to strengthen research capacity in Cambodia and support the country’s national security, development, and sovereignty as well as promote regional integration. 

Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace’s Main Activities 

  • Engages in an active research program publishing monographs and books on topics relevant to Cambodian foreign policy, the Greater Mekong Subregion, Southeast Asia, and the Indo-Pacific as a whole. 
  • Maintains two flagship publications – The Journal of Greater Mekong Studies and Diplomatic Briefing. 
  • Convenes analysts, scholars, and officials to engage in open dialogue on the salient issues of the day. Over the past year alone CICP has organized events examining: the Myanmar Crisis, the future development of Sino-American Relations, Digitalization in ASEAN, and the future of multilateralism. 

Partnership with Ponlok Chomnes

Under the Ponlok Chomnes Program, the Cambodian Institute for Cooperation and Peace will utilize the support for the following activities:

  • Research: Completion of two book projects: (i) The Post-COVID World Order: US-China Rivalry in the Indo-Pacific Region and (ii) “ASEAN’s Future Outlook in the Context of US-China Competition.” 
  • Policy Dialogues: Organizing a series of four dialogues, beginning in November 2021, on topics relevant to the region. 
  • Institutionalization and Organizational Capacity Building: Further developing CICP’s internal standards and procedures and structure in order to facilitate its long-term sustainability and success. 
  • Partnerships: Strengthening CICP’s ties to think tanks within Cambodia, in the region, and in Australia.
